The Professional Standards Committee works to advance the quality of social
work practice, improve the knowledge required for such practice and promote
professional development to improve practice. The Committee also works
to enhance the ethical practice of social work through the Code of Ethics
and legal regulation of social work.

Licensure is an issue that affects all social workers. It is important
to understand and abide by the licensure laws in Iowa.
• At the Bachelor’s education level, social workers have
the option to be a Licensed Bachelor Social Worker (LBSW).
• If a social worker has completed a CSWE accredited degree from
a school of social work, earning a Masters in Social Work, licensure MUST
occur. Upon completing the necessary paperwork and passing the examination,
one becomes a Licensed Master Social Worker (LMSW).
• Upon completion of a Master of Social Work degree, an individual
must complete two years full-time post-master’s social work practice
at the master’s level, including 4,000 hours of experience and 110
hours of supervision during the two-year period, to be considered for
the next phase of licensure, Licensed Independent Social Worker (LISW).
If a social worker does not wish to obtain an LISW license, the additional
supervision is not required by the licensing board.
